I was born into a middle class family of four children making me the fifth child. My parents were healthy, independent, and strong willed which they instilled into all of their children along with a sense of respect, dignity and honor. My household seemed to be very resourceful to the unfortunate family to look upon for guidance or structure. As I entered into the third grade, things became different for me. I was now living with my mother only, attending a different school and living in a new neighborhood. This transition was quite interesting for a nine year old, yet I stilled appeared to be somewhat strong within myself. My mother enrolled me into various extra curricular activities so that I may be removed from certain family situations. However, I still aimed to be apart of the family’s business and become involved in anyway possible. From my involvement, I became very serious within myself.
Being a serious young man allowed me to take life more serious and my involvement in various activities. While in high school, I held leading positions in numerous clubs and became very active during my senior year. My sincere involvement led me to my desirable career of being an educator. Having many impacts from my high school teachers, and noticing the shortage of African American male teachers, showed me a true compassion of my education and how I could make a difference if I too, became a teacher
Attending Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA, right after high school provided me with the “life from home” experience, that I was grateful for. I selected English as my major and Speech as my minor. I felt that I could teach the leaders of tomorrow how to interpret, understand, and speak many components that are related to English and Speech. Since my career has taken place, I have won numerous awards such as, Who’s Who Among American Teachers, 2000, 2001, 2002 and the First Year Teacher of the Year Award for Detroit Public Schools, by the Sallie Mae Education Foundation, 1997. Currently, I am the Assistant Principal at Cass Technical High School.
I have truly enjoyed every minute of my career. In the 20 years of being an effective Educator, I have served in many capacities at my school, such as, Testing Coordinator, Lead English Teacher, Curriculum Leader, and Acting Counselor. I am also active in community work with kids at my church and school, participating in “Feeding the Homeless” for various occasions and volunteering with the Detroit Police Department in conjunction with my school assisting with our youth. Also, I spend much time with community projects with my fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
In complete retrospect, I am thankful to God for the guidance that he has given me and the people he has placed in my life that has truly been a great influence. Receiving the training at Wayne State University and giving it back to my students lets me know that I can make a difference.
